Sergey Sayadov – Ivan L. Lazarev’s role in Russian-Armenian relations
The article discusses I.L. Lazarev’s role in the Russian-Armenian relations of the XVIII century depicting the process of his establishment as a state and public figure, one of the leaders of the national liberation movement, as well as his activities as a representative of the Armenian community in Russia. He and Archbishop Joseph Arghutinski discussed the drafts of the restoration of the Armenian State with the tsarist government. He participated in developing a Russian policy in the Caucasus, in the organization of deportation of Armenians from the Crimea to Don. Thanks to his efforts the authorities helped the displaced, as well as freed them from paying taxes. Being one of the richest entrepreneurs of the time, I.L. Lazarev built churches, schools and publishing houses at his own expenses in Moscow, St. Petersburg and in the Armenian communities of Russia. He went down in history as the founder of Lazarev Institute of Oriental Languages, which played an important role in giving recognition to the history and culture of the Armenian people, as well as in developing Russian-Armenian relations.
